Technological Change and (Un)Employment

The talk will be structured in two parts. The first discusses potential drivers of investment in industrial automation technology, with special emphasis on labour market institutions. The second part of the talk focuses on the impact of automation in manufacturing and its effect on the labour market. Key differences between automation in advanced and developing economies will be discussed based on evidence from the United Kingdom and Indonesia.

Speaker

Giorgio Presidente is a postdoctoral researcher at the Oxford Martin School, Oxford University since 2020. Previously, he worked as a consultant for the World Bank and in 2015, he participated in the Young Professional Program at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. He completed his PhD in 2016 at the Paris School of Economics. His main research interest is the interplay between legal institutions and technological change, with a focus on automation. He also works on topics related to firm-level resource reallocation, productivity and the impact of policy on economic development.
