Social Implications of Medically Assisted Reproduction
DigClass Workshop: Social Implications of Medically Assisted Reproduction
Description
This workshop brought together selected experts currently working, from different disciplinary approaches, on Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) and its implications for fertility, socioeconomic inequality, child development, and ethics. The workshop took place on 24th November and 25th November at the JRC site in Seville.
We addressed the following topics in dedicated sessions:
- The role that assisted reproduction has on total fertility and whether the increasing use of these treatments can mitigate fertility decline
- Socioeconomic gaps in access to and use of assisted reproduction and the influence of barriers to access
- Child outcomes and maternal health in children conceived after assisted reproduction relative to those conceived naturally
- Ethical considerations around assisted reproduction and regulatory aspects
The DigClass Team Scientific Committee organises the workshop: Leire Salazar, Carlos Gil-Hernández, Guillem Vidal-Lorda, Davide Villani, Alicia de Quinto

DigClass International Workshop
This workshop was organized by the DigClass team within the JRC-Centre for Advanced Studies. DigClass is a project born out of increasing concern in Europe about the implications of the digital revolution for social inequalities and democratic processes. The project aims to understand better how digital technologies alter the mechanisms that generate inequalities in the distribution of resources and life chances, which is crucial for social policies to respond to the challenges of the digital revolution.
